Coming Home

Caltrain’s state-of-the-art electric trains will transform travel between San Francisco and San Jose, providing faster, quieter, greener and more frequent service to our riders. The first trainset has now arrived at the Caltrain Corridor and more are on the way! Assembled in Salt Lake City, Utah, the trains pass by a number of exciting landmarks and stunning regional scenery as they make their way home. After they arrive, the electric trains and new electrification infrastructure undergo rigorous system testing.

Black Rock Desert

Black Rock Desert

From the mountains and lakes of Utah, the trainset travels into the “Silver State,” Nevada. It passes by the Black Rock Desert, one of the largest protected desert playas in the United States. This area features rugged canyons, pristine hot springs, and expansive dry lake beds as well as 180 miles of historic emigrant trails used by early pioneers making their way west.

Plumas National Forest

Plumas National Forest

As the trainset crosses the Nevada-California border, it passes by Plumas National Forest in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains. Established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, the forest includes 75 miles of the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail.

Great Salt Lake

Great Salt Lake

The electric trainset begins its journey where the official state dance is the square dance, Utah. First passing by the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere at 75 miles long. Early explorers initially thought the lake was an extension of the Pacific Ocean.

Lake Tahoe

California State Railroad Museum

California State Railroad Museum

On the final leg of its historic journey, the trainset passes by a piece of train history — the California State Railroad Museum. Located in Sacramento, the museum features 21 restored locomotives and cars, with exhibits that illustrate how railroads have shaped our lives, economy and the unique culture of California and the West.
